ASSESSMENT

Google DeepMind fields the Gemini family — Gemini 3.1 Pro in the flagship range, 3.5 Flash competing on speed and price at the balanced tier. The lab traces to DeepMind (2010), merged with Google Brain into Google DeepMind in 2023; Gemini is the product of that combined organization.

Its historical differentiator is context length, and the register is watching a rumored 2M-context Gemini 3.5 Pro that had not shipped as of the August survey — held out of the directory under the no-vaporware standard until it does. Neither shipped Gemini here carries an independent index mark in this survey, so its standing rests on vendor and arena signals rather than an Artificial Analysis number.

Google's distribution reach — Search, Android, Cloud — is a structural advantage the register does not score but which plainly shapes adoption. The open question for Volume 2 is whether the flagship Gemini lands an independent mark that places it precisely against Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol.
